The Moynihan Center at The City College of New York is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Annika Marlen Hinze as Academic Director of the Master of Public Administration Program and Professor of Political Science. Dr. Hinze joins the Moynihan Center from Fordham University, where she served as a Full Professor of Political Science and directed the Urban Studies program from 2016 to 2024.

A scholar of urban politics, immigration policy, democratic theory, and gender equality, Dr. Hinze brings to the MPA Program a career defined by research and engagement with the communities her work examines. She is also a co-PI with Fordham's Initiative on Migrants, Migration, and Human Dignity, which supports immigrant accompaniment practice, research, and teaching in partnership with migrant-serving organizations across New York City and at the US-Mexico border.

“The MPA Program prepares students to lead in public life—and Dr. Hinze's career embodies that commitment. Her work on urban politics, immigration, and democratic governance speaks to the challenges our students will face as practitioners. We could not be more pleased to have her join us," said Carlo Invernizzi Accetti, executive director of the Moynihan Center.

Dr. Hinze is the author or co-author of several foundational texts in urban politics. Her first book, Turkish Berlin: Integration Policy and Urban Space (University of Minnesota Press, 2013), examines integration policy and the lived experiences of second-generation Turk-German women in Berlin. She is co-author, with Dennis R. Judd, of the 10th and 11th editions of City Politics: Cities and Suburbs in 21st Century America (Routledge)—with a 12th edition currently underway—and co-editor, with James M. Smith, of the 8th edition of American Urban Politics in a Global Age (Routledge, 2024). She serves on the editorial board of Urban Affairs Review and is co-editor of the International Political Science Review, the flagship journal of the International Political Science Association.

Her current research includes a recently completed project on the persistent segregation of recreational space in the New York City metro area and a new book manuscript, A Country Behind a Wall: Immigration Policy, Public Discourse, and the Reality of the Borderlands.

"I am incredibly excited to join the Moynihan Center at CCNY as the new Academic Director for the MPA program. Building on my years directing Fordham's Urban Studies Program, this role unites my deep passion for cities and social justice with a lifelong admiration for public service. I cannot wait to start working with CCNY's incredible students to get into the weeds of urban and local policymaking," said Dr. Hinze.

Dr. Hinze studied English, North American studies, and modern history at Humboldt University and Free University in Berlin, Germany, and holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Illinois, Chicago. Her field research has taken her to cities across Canada, Germany, Turkey, and the United States, as well as the US-Mexico borderlands.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Hinze.
