On the Use and Abuse of Expertise in Politics: Moynihan, the Founders, and the Possibilities and Limits of Social Science
May 20, 2026
On April 29, the Moynihan Center, in partnership with The Jack Miller Center, hosted Dr. Greg Weiner, president of Assumption University, for a lecture titled “On the Use and Abuse of Expertise in Politics: Moynihan, the Founders, and the Possibilities and Limits of Social Science.”
This event marked the second installment in our series commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The series examines how democratic societies can remain committed to truth while preserving space for legitimate disagreement, inspired by Senator Moynihan’s well‑known reminder that “everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts.” Dr. Weiner’s lecture was followed by an engaging Q&A session.
Thank you to Dr. Weiner for sharing his expertise, and to our audience for their thoughtful participation!
