Last week, Dr. Adam Baczko joined Moynihan Academic Freedom Fellow Dr. Homeira Qaderi for a discussion of his book “The Taliban Courts in Afghanistan.”

Drawing on extensive fieldwork and unprecedented access to Taliban judges and court users, Dr. Baczko examined how the Taliban strategically built a parallel justice system during wartime—one that often outperformed coalition-backed institutions. The conversation explored critical questions about governance, legitimacy, and the complexities of state-building in conflict zones.
