This October, students in the Moynihan Public Service Fellowship attended a Next Generation Service Corps Regional Event hosted by Montclair State University. The Moynihan Center is a member of the NextGen Service affiliate network: a national initiative that aims to inspire and prepare undergraduate students from all majors for meaningful careers in public service and cross-sector leadership. This regional event aimed to form local connections for students, and attendees included students and staff from Montclair State University, The Moynihan Center, Rutgers University, the University of Baltimore, and fellow CUNY Baruch College.
The event began with an icebreaker activity between students and leaders from other colleges in the NextGen Service network. Attendees took a quiz to determine their leadership style and split into groups to discuss the qualities of each style and what made their respective groupings distinctive. After that, Montclair State President Jonathan Koppell welcomed the group to campus and introduced the student Campus Program leaders and representatives from guest institutions.
The main event of the day was a panel on public service leadership and the current state of education. The panel was moderated by Montclair State Director of Public Service Programs Krystal Woolston, and panelists included Moynihan Center Managing Director Michael Miller, Volcker Alliance President Sara Mogulescu, Rutgers University Dean Kaifeng Yang, and Montclair State President Jonathan Koppell. They shared the pivotal moments that inspired them to pursue public service and shared insights from their years of experience in the field.
After the panel, all attendees participated in two of three possible workshops. Two workshops (Navigating the Application Process and Future Careers, Practical Skills and Self-Presentation) were co-facilitated by Moynihan Center Fellowship Relations Manager Leanna Carroll and Assistant Director of Fellowships Layana Abu Touq. The event offered a valuable networking opportunity for students and continued the Moynihan Center’s long-standing collaboration with NextGen Service Corps.
Thank you to Montclair State University for hosting this event and to NextGen Service Corps for their continued support.
