Conflict Art in the Congo: A Talk and Photo Exhibit of Gbadolité Airport
October 18, 2024
On Thursday, October 17, the Moynihan Center had the privilege of hosting an event as part of Congo in Harlem Week. Moynihan Center Leader-in-Residence, Dr. Tatiana Carayannis, along with Dr. José Mvuezolo Bazonzi presented on the complex history of war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as represented in graffiti at the Gbadolité Airport.
The discussion was enriched by a collection of photographs taken by Dr. Carayannis. These compelling images showcased charcoal inscriptions left by combatants at Gbadolité Airport during the conflict. The drawings depict weapons, religious symbols, scripture, individual names, and even phone numbers, and underscore the fraught relationship between war, power, and memory. Following the presentation, guests were encouraged to explore the gallery and reflect on these themes in conversation with each other.
Thank you to Dr. Carayannis and Dr. Bazonzi for their insights, and to everyone who attended the event!
